Paris Agreement
T
The Paris Climate Agreement primarily draws attention to the climate problem. And it lays out a global action plan to this problem that should be implemented as soon as possible. The Paris Agreement is an international agreement in which 197 countries agree that they should act together in order to prevent the climate crisis. The Paris Agreement (Paris Climate Agreement), under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), signed in 2015 on climate change mitigation, adaptation and financing, entered into force as a result of meeting the ratification of the agreement by the party that accounted for 55% of global greenhouse gas emissions in 2016. According to the Paris Agreement, each country must identify and regularly report its contribution to reducing global warming.
The Paris Agreement has a long-term temperature
target. The Paris Agreement, which foresees the common action of countries in
order to prevent the climate crisis, aims to limit the increase in the global
average surface temperature to 2 degrees, and to keep it below 1.5 degrees if
possible. This target is to limit the global average temperature increase to
2°C (3.6°F) increase from pre-industrial levels, and even 1.5°C is an effort.
Because it is accepted that limiting the temperature increase to 1.5 instead of
2°C will significantly reduce the risks and effects of climate change in terms
of risks and impacts. To achieve this, it is aimed to reduce emissions as soon
as possible and to balance the greenhouse gases released and captured until the
second half of the 21st century. The agreement also aims to increase the
ability of the parties to adapt to the adverse impacts of climate change and
ensure a “coherent flow of finance towards low greenhouse gas emissions and
climate resilient development”.
Has Turkey Signed the Paris Climate Agreement?
The Proposal for Approval of the Paris Climate
Agreement was approved unanimously by all deputies at the General Assembly of
the Grand National Assembly of Turkey on October 6, 2021. After the Cabinet
meeting on September 27, President Erdoğan announced that Turkey would ratify
the Paris Climate Agreement in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey in
October. Erdogan also pointed out that with this agreement, fundamental changes
will be made in many areas in the country. Turkey was the only OECD and G20
member that did not sign the agreement until now. Erdoğan also announced that
Turkey is targeting a zero emission rate by 2053 and that work has begun for
this.
President Erdoğan addressed the participants at the
76th UN General Assembly meetings at the United Nations (UN) General Assembly
Hall on September 21, 2021. In his statement, President Erdoğan said, "We
are one of the first countries to sign the Paris Climate Agreement. However, we
have not yet put this agreement into effect due to injustices related to
obligations.
I would like to announce to the whole world from
here, from the United Nations General Assembly, the decision we have taken
following the progress made in this framework recently. We plan to submit the
Paris Climate Agreement to our Assembly next month, in line with the
constructive steps to be taken and within the framework of our national
contribution statement. We intend to complete the ratification phase of the
'carbon neutral' agreement before the United Nations Climate Change Conference
in Glasgow. We consider this process, which will lead to radical changes in our
investment, production and employment policies, as one of the main elements of
our 2053 vision.
The United Nations (UN) reported that they welcomed
Turkey's ratification of the Paris Climate Agreement. UN Secretary General
Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said in a statement to the local correspondent,
"We welcome Turkey's ratification of the Paris Agreement.".
